Railroad Pollution & Risk Reduction SWPA Steering Committee
In our June 18th meeting, we’ll dive into SWPA Rail Yards and talk strategy for hastening the transition to electric locomotives. Rail yards are a big source of diesel pollution, which has known health risks for workers and communities who suffer cumulative exposure.• Matt Kelso, FracTracker Alliance will share his interactive map of rail yards in Southwestern PA’s Allegheny & Beaver Counties; we’ll look at it together. Based on the group’s knowledge, we’ll discuss which rail yard(s) might be good candidates for pollution reduction campaign / data collection / locomotive electrification.
• Hal Connolly, rail enthusiast, zero emissions technology advocate, former FRA climate/EJ & Climate Reality Project will share ideas for community-based campaign strategy & actions to reduce diesel emissions in rail yards & hasten the transition to electric locomotives.
• Note that Rail Yard electrification for switcher locomotives has previously qualified for CRISI grant funding. The CRISI notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) has not been released yet, but could be coming soon & applications could be due as soon as this fall.
