Anita Prizo and CCI invite the public to a presentation by the Center for Climate Integrity (CCI) on Wednesday, April 10th from 4:00 – 5:30pm that will address the hard costs Allegheny County is facing to protect residents from these climate-driven events, and opportunities to make the oil and gas companies most responsible for the climate crisis pay their fair share. This will be during the Allegheny County Council Sustainability & Green Initiatives Committee meeting.
Allegheny County experiences extreme weather events that result in landslides, untreated sewage overflows, and exposure to extreme heat. These events are worsening due to the climate crisis, and require expensive infrastructure investments to ensure local communities are resilient to our new unforgiving reality. Allegheny County taxpayers are currently on the hook for local climate adaptation costs, but they shouldn’t have to be. A more just alternative is to make the polluters most responsible for the climate crisis pay their fair share of the costs facing Allegheny County.

CCI will present the results from a recent study estimating the cost to address eight different climate impacts common to Allegheny County. Following that, local residents will share stories that shed light on what these impacts feel like on a personal level and how they are felt differently in communities across the county. Finally, we will discuss how over 40 communities are filing lawsuits to recover the costs of climate damages from major oil companies and to hold them accountable for decades of lying about the catastrophic impacts they knew their fossil fuel products would cause. It’s a playbook we’ve seen before from tobacco companies and opioid manufacturers — industries that have since been held accountable for the harm that they’ve caused.
