Breathe Project
Join us for a powerful screening of Underwater Projects, a documentary that explores the critical issue of climate resilience in Norfolk, Virginia. Home to the world’s largest naval base this community faces a major threat as sea levels rise due to climate change impacts. This issue is disproportionately affecting Black residents living in the historic St. Paul’s district.
Film Summary
Narrated by the iconic Wanda Sykes, Underwater Projects takes a deep dive into the redevelopment plan for the St. Paul’s public housing community. The film unpacks the city’s “climate resilience” strategy, which threatens to displace long-time Black residents in the name of redevelopment. Community members, scientists, government officials, and national security experts come together to highlight this urgent crisis.

This event is a unique opportunity to learn how climate change, displacement, and systemic inequality intersects our environmental justice (EJ) communities’ common issues and concerns. The film gives voice to those most impacted in Norfolk while exploring the larger implications for both their economy and national security. These issues are not uncommon for our own EJ communities who live along the 3 rivers, so we are giving time after the screening to hear some reactions and feedback from some of our local environmental activists.
