Peter Bartholomew rode the bus to his Pittsburgh high school everyday. He has asthma and the diesel exhaust gave him headaches and made it hard to breathe. He wanted cleaner air inside the buses, so he started the Health School Bus Campaign to help school districts and bus carriers install devices that reduce diesel emissions. His efforts resulted in more than 50 bus retrofits, and the school board now aims to install filters on 85 percent of its fleet by 2014.

  1. Wow! This sound awesome! It is hard to fathom the amount of fuel emmissions pollute our air. What would be really cool is if Peter worked with the Port Authority to further his impact!

I drive an hour everyday in to Pittsburgh from the SouthEast area. It is awful to be stuck in one lane traffic behind a bus or truck with black soot from the exhaust spewing out. You don\’t need to have asthma. I get an instant headache and nasal stuffiness! There is an obnoxious chemical odor that I can smell. I don\’t think filters are enough, get rid of diesel fuels period!
